INTERESTING STAINED GLASS
(We have seen or heard about)

UK STAINED GLASS NEWS in 2010

James's Lone Albatross

Three specially commissioned stained glass windows are to be found at Bede's World, South Tyneside. The three windows are modern works of art inspired by the Golden Age of Northumbria. They celebrate Bede and the twin monastery of St Peter and St Paul's, Wearmouth-Jarrow, in which he lived and worked. The middle window (part shown, right) shows Bede, writing. All three windows draw inspiration from artefacts from Northumbria's Golden Age.

Stained glass artist Paul Georgiou said: "I was inspired by the brilliance of Bede - his mind was so far ahead of his time. I gathered a unique collection of old stained glass to put into these windows, and in some cases I painted the same pieces three or four times to get the designs exactly right."

Slumped bowl by Glass With Attitude

Glass With Attitude

We do not normally feature hot glass on this web site, but were absolutely stunned by this superb modern "bowl" on the "Glass with Attitude" web site.

Loonyscrapper by Judy
Loonyscrapper

One of the cleverer uses of scrap glass we have seen for a while. By Judy of Stained Glass by Judy, Minneapolis. I think this is the best off her site, but there is a lot going on there.

By Narcissus Quagliata By Johannes Schreiter
JUJO : previously our web site of the month

This is an absolutely amazing Japanese site. The link takes you to the artists' page. Click on their photos to see their stained glass work. Stunning!

Rain Forest

We ran a competition a few years ago and this was one of the winning entries.

By Lynette Forrester, its an interior window inspired by tropical rain forest forms.

Portrait of Matisse in stained glass

Tony Banfield's interpretation in stained glass of a portrait of Matisse (By Derain), 1993.

Dimensions 65cm x 45cm x 0.5cm
materials: antique glass, lead, copper
processes used: glazed, leaded, patinated

Description
Based on Derain's portrait of Matisse. Part of ongoing experiments in "painterly" style. Attempts to depict faces using only unpainted coloured glass. As in "Campion" portrait, this also "reads" without backlighting as an opalescent glass mosaic, although light dramatically changes colours!
